The Faculty of Religion

The Faculty of Religion is a voluntary association of teachers. It started functioning in 1978 with the objective of moulding a community that is intellectually mature, morally upright, emotionally stable, spiritually inspired and socially committed.

The faculty undertakes the following programmers for the benefit of students:
Conducts regular religious instruction for all students.
Organises retreats, seminars, orientation programmes, human resource development programmes, prayer meetings, etc for teachers, non-teaching staff and students.
Bible Apostolate: propagates Bible message in the campus through Cartoons, Essay Competitions, Quiz, etc.

CAREER GUIDANCE CENTRE

The scholastic year 2006-’07 has been a remarkable year for St.Thomas College, Pala in many respects. The institute witnessed some definite changes, one among them being the reconstitution of the administrative head. Rev.Dr.Mathew Kokkatt took over as Principal. It is praiseworthy to note that many innovative and vital measures were taken to place this institute at the helm. One of the concrete steps to this auspicious end was the commencement of the Career Guidance Centre in the college. The service of the center is available from 9.30 a.m to 5.00 p.m 

The focus of the center, as clearly spelt out , is designed to impart skill training and guidance to students so as to meet the challenges of this fast growing globalized world and the emerging trends of the employment scenario. One of the goals of education is to prepare students to take up challenging careers according to the aptitude of the individuals. St.Thomas College, with its constant efforts to impart quality education and training programmes to its students, has started the Free Hour Tests in the academic year. It includes Aptitude Tests to improve the numerical ability, reasoning ability, mental ability, verbal ability, comprehension skills etc. Quiz competition is conducted in classes occasionally to enhance and enrich the general knowledge to face the PSC and UPSC tests confidently. 

The students often lack effective communication skills in English . Career Guidance Centre helps to enhance the students communication skills and presentation skills. It has played a significant role in ensuring quality sustenance and enhancement as a continuous process in the college. Various skill development programmes and activities are being implemented during this year.  
Motivation means having a desire to do something. CGC motivates students to actualize their potentialities by nurturing it through the constant employment of the mind and not being carried out by the peer pressures. This center has played a significant role in developing the students mental health. Most of the students have a have a desire to desire to become a good personality. Lack of confidence and unnecessary tension are the main hindrance to their growth. Personality development programmes and counseling sessions enlighten the students to concentrate on their studies by promoting self-awareness and confidence.  

Newspapers, several career guidance books, magazines, weeklies etc. are other attractions of the center. Career guidance in the form of Internet based queries, files etc. pool many students to the center. Spoken English, Interview preparations, group discussions, social observation of important days, brainstorming sessions etc. help students to be at ease in tight competitions.

Counselling Service:
With the active support of the PTA, the Faculty of Religion offers counseling service to students. Dr. Mathew Panthalanical, specialist in Counseling will be available in the college, one full day in  a week for counseling services. Students may meet the following teachers for counseling service Dr. K. K. Jose (Stat.) Dr. P. D. George (Hindi), Shri. K. A. Alexander (Eng.), Shri. V. V. Georgekutty (Comm.) Shri. Benny Kurian (Stat.) and Dr. P.O Augusty (Bot.)

The Faculty has instituted an endowment of Rs.55,000/- in memory of Rev. Dr. Joseph Nadayath, former Principal, St. Thomas Training College, Pala. A cash award of Rs.1000/- each will be given to the best II DC and II PG Dalit Catholic Students using the interestsof the environments . Seperate awards will be given to the best candidate from among the arts and science students on the basis of Ist year University examination results.

Career Club 
This year onwards the college will have the services of four teachers as Carrer Counselors. They are Mr. K.V. Thomas (Commerce), Mr. Tommy Cherian (English), Mr. Seemon Thomas (Statistics) and Dr. C.K. James (Hindi). After attending a 3 week course at the Institute for Career Studies at Lucknow, they have been certified as professional Career Counselors. Students and Parents can contact them for information regarding career choices, professional courses, eligibility criteria, future prospects etc. They will also conduct career orientation programmes.

Catholic Students’ Movement ( C S M )

It is an organization targeted mainly on Catholic students. However, it extends its services and facilities to all students in the Campus.


Motto: Change the world by changing oneself.
Objectives: the basic objective of the activities of CSM is integral personality development of Campus youth. To this end, CSM arranges programmes focusing on the spiritual, intellectual and socio-cultural needs of its members.

Jesus Youth

It is a youth initiative rooted in the spirituality of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.        It organizes prayer meetings on every Thursday. All students are welcome to participate.  It also organizes spiritual seminars, retreats, etc. Jesus Youth acts as an agent and promoter of personal renewal of students in the college.

National Cadet Corps (NCC)

The college offers Army and Naval NCC training to selected students. The full-fledged NCC training covers a period of over 3 years, while the minimum period is 2 years. Any physically fit student from 1st degree classes is eligible to be recruited to theNCC. Selection will be made at the beginning of each academic year.

National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme functions under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The overall objective of the Scheme as initially conceived was service to the community while undergoing instruction in an educational institution. Over the years, there has been a shift of emphasis with regard to the goal and the objective of the scheme. The development of the personality of the students through involvement in community service is a major objective now.
A unit of the NSS was started in the College in 1972. Now there are four units with more than five hundred volunteers. Members are selected on the basis of their aptitude. Admission is open to  I DC, and I PG students only. The duration of the course is two years.

Science Forum

The Forum aims to create awareness of the need for scientific literacy. Seminars, lectures, quiz programmes, essay competitions, etc will be organized for the students. The Forum intends to keep students informed of the latest trends in Science and Technology. Membership is open to all students.

Youth Red Cross

The Youth Red Cross proposes to organize programmes in health education. Students will be given training in First Aid and other voluntary health services. Membership is open to all students.

Anti-Narcotic Club

Report

This is an association of students committed to keeping the campus free from the menace of alcoholism and drug abuse. Members will be provided with detailed information on the nature and operations of addictive drug and liquors by means of audio-visual instruction, seminars and discussions. A vigilance group will be formed from among committed members to prevent sale or use of drugs in the campus. Any student interested in fighting this menace is welcome to join the club. Certificates will be issued to members to acknowledge active participation.

Tourism Club

A Tourism Club has been formed in the College with the support of the District Tourism Promotion Council under the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala. 100 students have been enrolled in the Club. The activities of the Tourism Club were formally inaugurated by Mr. Roy Joseph, Managing Director, Kallarackal Resorts Pvt. Ltd., Cochin, on 2 August 2003 at a meeting presided over by Rev. Dr. M.M. Mathew, the Principal. Mr. Roy Joseph delivered a lecture on ‘Career Opportunities in Tourism Industry’. A one-day seminar on ‘Ecotourism’ was conducted on 7 October 2003. Mr. C. Anilkumar, Managing Director, Spices Village, Thekkady, was the chief resource person. A Tourism Quiz was conducted with Dr. G.D. Gem Mathew (Dept. of Chemistry) as quiz master. Mr. Thomas Mathew of IMA (Economics) and Mr. Tom J. Vallikappan of II DC (Physics) won the first and second prizes respectively. In the ‘Meet the Guest Programme’ held on 13 February 2004, Mr. P.C. Thomas, Hon’ble Minister of State for Law and Justice, Govt. of India, was the chief guest. He delivered a lecture on ‘Tourism Development in Kerala’. The activities of the Tourism Club were co-ordinated by the staff

Montage Film Club

The club organizes film shows, classes on cinema, film appreciation courses and photography contest. Membership is open to all students. The Club has a library of over 65 books and journals dealing with the Mass Media, mainly Cinema. The club also gives guidance to those who intend to choose a career in Mass Media.

Music Club

Music has been considered to be the fountain head of all arts since ancient times.  The aim of the Music Club is to provide students with training in music – vocal and instrumental.

Drama Club

The tradition of looking at drama not only as the written or spoken word, but as a configuration of different types of communication techniques was established in ancient India.  The aim of the Drama Club is to provide the students with training in all aspects of drama and enable them to stage dramas on their own.  Recent achievements of the Drama Club include staging of the Shakespearen plays King Lear in 1999 and Othello in 2001.

Literary Club (Malayalam)

The aim of the Literary Club (Malayalam) is to promote creative writing in Malayalam among the teachers, non-teaching staff and students of the college.  To this end, a quarterly journal titled Navasahiti is being published.

Literary Club (English)

The aim of the Literary Club (English) is to foster creative writing in English among the teachers, non-teaching staff and students of the college.  It also gives practical training in journalism to the students.  A tabloid  titled Campus Pigeon edited by the students is being published with this aim in mind

Quiz Club

A broad based knowledge, spanning a width greater than one’s formal education is a great asset to individuals in the modern society, enabling them to tackle their own problems more effectively and also contribute more efficiently to the solution of their society’s problems.  Apart from these, of course there is the bonus hours that the interest in several fields enriches an individual’s life greatly.  The aim of the Quiz Club is to awaken the interest of the students in a wide variety subjects.

Oratory Club
The Oratory Club provides coaching in the art of public speaking.  It is highly useful for all politically and socially inclined students who aspire for positions in the field of public activity.

EntrEpreneurship Development Club

  • The Entrepreneurship Development Club of the College has been formed under the auspices of the Department of Commerce in collaboration with the Kerala Institute of Entrepreneurship Development. The main objectives of the Club are to inculcate entrepreneurial culture among the students and to equip them with the skills, techniques and confidence to take up business. About 120 students drawn from different faculties are now members of the Club. The formal inauguration of the activities of the Club for the current year was conducted by Ms. V.M. Thankamma, General Manager, District Industries Centre, Kottayam, on 24 September 2003. The inaugural session was followed by a ‘Meet the Entrepreneur’ programme, in which leading industrialists from different places participated. They shared their industrial experiences which were quite useful for the students.

  • An entrepreneurial awareness programme was organised
    under the auspices of the Club on 9 October 2003. The chief resource persons were officials of the Industries Department and a leading entrepreneur. The resource persons clearly explained the present industrial scenario in the state and the challenges faced by new entrepreneurs. 

Ambedkar Forum

The inauguration of the activities for the current academic year started with a life orientation programme for the members on 26 July 2003. Rev. Dr. M.M. Mathew, Principal, inaugurated the programme. Mr. Nejoy P. Thomas and Mr. Leons from MINDS animated the session for the entire day. Personality development, career orientation, study techniques, life skills etc. were the topics of discussion for this interactive programme.
